Message Notes on YouVersion

What Is A Good & Beautiful Life?

Read Matthew 4:17. Jesus’ main message was to repent. If the Sermon on the Mount is an invitation to a good and beautiful life then, as disciples of Jesus, we have to figure out how to arrange our lives in alignment with it. 1. How would you describe a good and beautiful life before hearing this message? Where do you think that definition came from? 2. Where in your life might you be defending sin (small or big)? 3. How is your perspective of God’s goodness and beauty shifting as your mind is being renewed on what the Beatitudes actually mean? 4. Based on this conversation and what the Holy Spirit is saying to you, what is one next step He’s inviting you to take toward the good and beautiful life He’s offering you?

Jesus, may we think of You as good and true and right as we seek to find the good and beautiful life You offer.

The Sermon on the Mount

The Sermon on the Mount is Matthew 5-7.1. As the Sermon on the Mount was spoken over you by heart, what emotion did Jesus' words stir in you and why?2. Many of us are familiar with portions of the Sermon on the Mount but aren't as familiar with hearing it read all together. What surprised you about the Sermon on the Mount?3. We took a moment to think about God's goodness. What do you believe about God's goodness? How does His goodness change how you hear what He's saying in the Sermon on the Mount?4. What do you sense the Holy Spirit saying to you?5. Who else in your life needs an invitation to a good and beautiful life? What's one way you could invite them into what God's doing here this semester? Think Sundays, Circle, serve, Students, or Kids.

Jesus, thank You for inviting us into a good and beautiful life. Give us hearts and minds open to Your perspective of a good and beautiful life and help us take next steps on our journey with You.

- We have a weekly practice plan to help you go deeper with what we’re discovering on Sundays. Check it out on social media, or get it delivered right to your phone by texting “good” to 55888.- Over the next seven weeks, we'll journey through the Sermon on the Mount together – find resources at valleycreek.org/agoodandbeautifullife.

Hope Restored

Our vision is to be a movement of hope for the city and beyond. Hope is the confident expectation in the goodness of God. But, we are sensing there has been an erosion of hope that God wants to restore in us today. Let’s keep that in mind as we discuss the following questions: 1. Read Psalms 42:11. Sometimes what feels like lost hope is actually misplaced trust. Where is the Holy Spirit revealing misplaced trust in your life? And, how is He inviting you to put your hope back in God? 2. Read Psalms 39:7. We often look for hope in all the wrong places. What are you looking for and where have you been looking? 3. Read Lamentations 3:19-24. Grief and hope can exist at the same time. Where have you seen God meet you with hope in the middle of something hard? 4. Read Jeremiah 29:11-13. Control and apathy are by-products of hopelessness in our lives. Control causes us to tighten our grip on things while apathy causes us to live like there is no point in anything. Where might either of these be present in your life today and what is God bringing to your attention? 5. Read Romans 15:4. Endurance and encouragement help us cultivate hope inside of us. We are called to hold onto hope and encourage one another. Who is someone you can intentionally carry hope to this week, and how will you do it?

Holy Spirit, will you restore our hope?

The Word of God Has Come to You

1. Isaiah 38:4. A prophetic word is a specific word from God that creates the future with Him. What would your summary statement be of what God has been speaking to you throughout this prophetic reset series? 2. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21. God's been speaking – we've asked, we've listened, and now it's time to respond. Will you receive the prophetic reset He's speaking to you?- If yes, what does obedience look like, and who could help you walk it out?- If not, what's holding you back? 3. What else is the Holy Spirit revealing to you?

Take a few minutes to pray over each other that each person in Circle would keep seeking God's voice above all other voices and move forward with Him.

- You can find "I Believe," our newest Valley Creek Worship single wherever you listen to music. Check out all Worship resources here.- This Tuesday at 7pm we'll launch our fall semester of Transformation Tuesday at the Flower Mound Campus. Everyone is welcome. The Only Voice Worth Listening To

Take the first 5-7 minutes to get to know each other, each other's family, and how long you've been coming to Valley Creek.

1. A video from Pastor John went out to everyone in a Circle this week. If you haven't watched it as a group yet, consider pulling it up together before you dig in, you can access it here. What would it look like for us to focus on relationships and discipleship this semester, and who else can you invite into this Circle? 2. A prophetic word is a specific word from God that creates the future with Him. As God's been speaking to you lately, what is He saying? 3. Read Luke 10:38-42. Martha was busy serving, but Mary chose to sit and listen. Where do you see yourself in this story right now and what is God trying to show you through it? 4. Read Acts 3:19. Our hearts are the one thing hard enough to resist the voice of God. As He speaks, we have an opportunity to align and advance our life with Him. But we often want the breakthrough without the breaking. So with grace and humility let's create space for confession and repentance. What's a hard place in your heart God's inviting you to submit and surrender – a place where you want His word, spirit and life, to pierce and soften? 5. Read 1 Corinthians 14:24-25. We're invited to grow as people of love through engaging the Word of God, connecting with the people of God, cultivating our secret place, and stepping out in faith. Which of those is God inviting you to lean into this semester?

We’re setting aside August 31–September 6 for a week of prayer and fasting, as we align our lives with God’s voice and lean into the prophetic reset He wants to do in this season. Fasting is simply giving up food so we can feast on God. You can find resources on fasting here.

Jesus, give us the grace and humility to align our lives with what You are speaking.

- On September 1, we're gathering at the Flower Mound Campus only for Tuesday Night Prayer – our Open Heaven Recording. God's given us so much revelation, and we're not just recording an album, we're capturing an encounter under an open heaven. Come sing those songs back to Him with us. As you reflect on where you are right now, how does God seem to be answering these questions? - God, what season am I in?- God, what is this season for?- God, how do I arrange my life around You in this season? And as you reflect on those answers, how is it different from your perspective of the season you're in? 2. Read 1 Corinthians 7:17. God has assigned each of us a particular season. Where do you sense God inviting you to become more aware of Him in this season? 3. Read Luke 12:54-56. Here, Jesus warns us about missing the bigger picture of what God is doing. Are You Enjoying God and His Church?

This weekend, we talked about a few reasons people aren't filled with the Holy Spirit. Which of these do you resonate with, and what might God be inviting you into instead?- We’re prideful (Romans 8:5)- We don’t understand (Hebrews 11:3)- We don’t know about it (Acts 19:2)- We think it’s weird (1 Corinthians 12:7)- We resist (Acts 7:51) 4. Read Ephesians 5:18. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is both an initial experience and an ongoing lifestyle. What would it look like for you to live aware of and responsive to the Holy Spirit in your everyday life this week? 5. For those who went to the Fuel the Fire prayer time on Sunday, how did you encounter God?

Pray this simple prayer as you close your Circle. This is also a great phrase to use as you lean into the invitation to pray every day this week. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing in Jesus’ name.

This weekend, we celebrated people taking a step into baptism and declaring, “Jesus is Lord, and I will follow Him.”- What is your baptism story?- If you haven’t been baptized yet, what is the Holy Spirit revealing to you about baptism? 2. Read Acts 2:41-47. Baptism leads to a lifestyle of discipleship. It’s not just a moment – it leads to a new way of living. As you consider this passage, where do you see your life aligning with it right now? What is God stirring in you? 3. As you reflect on Acts 2:41-47 and the 10 foundational next steps, which one is God inviting you to take or re-engage with as you fuel the fire? Jesus, lead us to move forward with fueling the fire as we look to You.

Why?- “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)- “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”(Luke 23:43)- “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” (John 19:26-27)- “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)- “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)- “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46)- “It is finished.” (John 19:30) 3. Who Is Your One?

Access our Bible App event with Scriptures and message notes from the weekend. 1. Easter creates a unique opportunity where people are more open to encountering Jesus. Who is the one person you’re inviting, what’s your plan to invite them, and why do you hope they come? Check out the bottom of this page for resources to help! 2. Read Matthew 21:13. We prayed these six prayers out loud together this weekend as we prepared for Easter. Which prayer stood out to you the most, and why?- I would have a fresh encounter with the cross (1 Corinthians 1:18)- I would boldly live on mission this week (Isaiah 6:8)- They would come and be open (John 1:46-47)- They would have an encounter with Jesus (Genesis 28:16)- We would be a movement of hope (Acts 12:24 TPT)- Jesus would be lifted up (John 12:32) 3. Read Luke 15:7. Living on mission is the natural response to a burning fire, and it brings joy to God. What do you think it looks like for God to feel joy over one person, and how does that change the way you see your one person?

We are a movement of hope for the city and beyond, and we want Jesus to be lifted up this Easter! As a circle, pray these things out loud for each person you’re inviting:- They would come and be open- They would have an encounter with Jesus

Jesus has placed specific people in your life that He wants to have an encounter with this Easter! We don’t rest from our life; we rest for it. When you think about rest or vacation, what are you usually hoping it will give you? What does real rest with God look like in your life right now? 2. Read Romans 6:10-11 and Galatians 2:20-21. Jesus didn’t live a segmented life, living differently in different spaces. He lived one life unto God. Where do you see that kind of “one life” with Jesus in your life right now? Where do you feel tension between different versions of yourself in different places? 3. Humility, gratitude, and margin are three things that help us build a life of rest. Which one is the Holy Spirit highlighting, and what does He want to say? 4. Read Leviticus 23:22. God tells His people not to harvest all the way to the edges of their field, and He invites us to do the same in the way we build our lives. What might it look like for you to arrange or rearrange your life so there’s margin for God and people?

Jesus, thank You for the life of rest You call us to. May we build a set-apart life with You.

Year One Update

We believe God has called Valley Creek Church to do five things in the next five years through Missional Move: Create the Future. A missional move is when someone takes their next step so someone else can take theirs. You can find the latest updates, learn how to get involved, and contribute to the Missional Move by going to valleycreek.org/missionalmove.

Access our Bible App event with Scriptures and message notes from the weekend. Start Here: Take a moment to share what stood out most to you from the one-year update. What felt exciting, weighty, or faith-building as you heard what God is doing? 1. Whether this is your first time hearing about Missional Move: Create the Future or you’ve been with us, which of the five things is God stirring your heart toward right now? Why?- Prayer Center- Training Center- Argyle Campus- University Campus- 7 Continent Strategy 2. We’ve asked everyone to commit to these three things for this Missional Move. Use these questions to talk through them as a circle:- Choose to commit to Valley Creek as your church. Have you said, “This is my church” yet? If so, what does that mean to you? If not, what might it look like to prayerfully consider that now?- Give a sacrificial financial gift over the next year above and beyond your current tithes and offerings. Read 2 Samuel 24:24. What would it look like for your giving to actually cost you something? If you’ve made a commitment, how is it going? If not, is God stirring you to participate in this way?- Take one tangible next step of faith each year over the next four years. For those here for year one, what was your next step and what did God do in you? What step of faith do you sense God calling you to this year? 3. Read Hebrews 12:29 and 1 Corinthians 3:12-14. God is a consuming fire, and one day our lives will pass through that fire. What are you creating with God right now that you believe will last?

Jesus, let there be a people whose hearts are on fire for You and who use their lives and resources to create the future for the good of others and the glory of God.

As we’ve been talking about fueling the fire, you may have gotten some smoke in your eyes or caught some sparks. What has that looked like for you and where is God inviting you to step out in faith and humility? 2. Read Exodus 20:5-6. Every generation is responsible for tending the fire of their lives.- What have you been hoping to pass on to the next generation, and how is God reshaping your perspective on what matters most?- Based on your life today, what kind of fire would the next generation inherit from you? 3. Read James 1:22. We’ve been having a conversation about fueling the fire, but we also need to actually take action. Leviticus 6:9-13 shows us three ways we keep the fire burning:- Remove the ash- Add what fuels the fire- Arrange our life so it continues to burnWhat’s one specific next step God is inviting you to take in one of these three areas so your fire can burn hot? Who can you invite to help hold you accountable?

Father, may Your fire fall on us so that we may become people with radiant faces, burning hearts, and holy lives.

How Do You Know If Your Fire Is Real?

Valley Creek 101 is next Sunday. If you’re new, have never attended, or know someone new, this is a great next step. Take a minute as a circle to talk about who you can invite. Register at valleycreek.org/valleycreek101. Also, celebrate anyone joining your circle for the first time and those who invited them! Let’s keep building a culture of invitation and asking God who He wants to be in your circle.

Access our Bible App event with Scriptures and message notes from the weekend. We discovered five things about fire in our conversation this weekend. Look at the questions for each one, and continue that conversation as a circle. 1. There is no fire in the world. (1 Kings 18:25-29, Ecclesiastes 6:7)- Where are you tempted to look for fulfillment outside of God?- What has promised life but left you wanting more? 2. Fire authenticates. (1 Kings 18:36-39, 1 Peter 1:7)- Where do you see evidence of God’s work in your life right now?- How is your faith being refined in this season? 3. Fire falls on sacrifice. (1 Kings 18:33-35, Romans 12:1, and Psalms 51:17)- Your sacrifice could be time, money, treasure, or your heart. What is God inviting you to place on the altar right now, and what does that look like?- Do you offer God your Sabbath and tithe? If not, why? 4. Fire is missional. (1 Kings 18:39)- If the fire of God burned more brightly in your life, who might be impacted? 5. Fire creates an open heaven. (1 Kings 18:41-45)- We can’t do anything without God, and He won’t do it without us. What would it look like for you to prepare and pray in this season?

Lord, may we be a people with radiant faces, burning hearts, and holy lives in Jesus’ name.

Take a moment to celebrate anyone joining for the first time, and celebrate those who invited them! Then talk as a circle about who each of you are inviting. Remember, if you came to circle for the first time or invited someone for the first time, plan a time to mark your move together at the Movement Board next Sunday! 2. Read 2 Corinthians 3:18. What does “glory to glory” look like for you right now, and what is the “to” God is asking you to deal with? 3. Read Ephesians 4:29-30. We can tell if our fire is out or not by the words we use and the conversations we have. What have your conversations been full of lately, and are they fueling or quenching your fire? 4. Read Luke 24:25-27. We all have areas where we can be slow of heart – where we hear what God has said but hesitate to fully believe it. With that in mind, where is God inviting you to be quick to repent? 5. Our fire doesn't grow when we learn more about our own lives. Our fire grows by learning more about Jesus, looking at the cross, and consuming God's Word. So this week, how is the Holy Spirit inviting you to fuel your fire?

Bitterness can harden our hearts, and hard hearts don’t burn. If you feel like there's bitterness or hardness in your heart, share that as an act of humility. Then, by faith, pray Ezekiel 36:26 over one another.

How Is God Interrupting Your Life?

1. Take a moment to celebrate anyone joining for the first time, and celebrate those who invited them! Then talk as a circle about who each of you are inviting. 2. Read Hebrews 11:1,6 and James 4:6. We believe that our faith and humility are unlocking what God wants to do in this season. Which one are you struggling with more – faith or humility? Why? 3. God cares more about our hearts than our plans, so He interrupts our lives to lead us closer to Him. Use these questions to process what God’s doing in your life right now:a. Where is God interrupting your life?b. What do you think He’s trying to show you?c. How is He inviting you to respond? 4. Based on our experience this weekend, how did you encounter God? 5. Who is the most important person for you to keep this conversation going with?

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalms 90:12Jesus, thank You for meeting us where we’re at, interrupting our lives, and calling us back to You. Show us how to move forward with faith and humility as we follow You.

Moving on Mission to Maturity

Access our Bible App event with Scriptures and message notes from the weekend. 1. Read Matthew 28:19-20. This weekend, we celebrated people responding to the gospel by taking a next step into the waters of baptism! They declared, "Jesus is Lord, and I will follow Him.” How did seeing others step forward in faith inspire you on your own journey with Jesus? 2. We also spent time reflecting on mission, movement, and maturity with these three questions. Share with your Circle what you’re processing with God:- What’s the one thing keeping you from maturity that you need to surrender to the Lord, and what would that look like?- What was the heart of what God was trying to say to you this fall?- How do you need to respond? 3. This week, we were challenged to ask, listen, and respond to God’s voice about moving forward on mission toward someone else. What’s one way you can do this between now and the end of the year, and what would it look like to actually take that step by faith?

Thank You Jesus for Your grace. May we keep moving forward with you in movement, mission, and maturity.

Called to Maturity

Start your circle by inviting the Holy Spirit in through prayer. Click here to access our Bible app event with Scriptures and message notes from the weekend. 1. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus says, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” How is your understanding of this verse changing as we’ve worked through this collection of talks? 2. Spiritual formation is the process of being formed into the image of Jesus to become a person of love. Looking back over the past few years of your life, is your soul changing, growing, and maturing?- How so?- If not, why and why are we okay with that?- If not, what forms of counterfeit maturity are you pursuing? 3. Read Hebrews 5:11-6:1 through the lens of God’s grace rather than self-condemnation or self-righteousness, then answer these questions:- How would you finish this phrase, “By this time, I ought to _________.”- What's one way you can begin feeding on God’s Word for yourself (meat) instead of relying on “milk”?- When was the last time you said “I have sinned against the Lord,” and why do you think repentance is such an important part of maturity? 4. The last question we were asked on Sunday was, “We have a vision and a plan for everything else in life. Do you have a vision and a plan for maturity?”- If yes, what is it, and how will you walk it out?- If not, what's holding you back?

Holy Spirit, continue to make us mature in Jesus’ name.
